Funding for the project was granted by The Research Council of Lithuania due to the tender. Activities: 01-04-2011 - 31-03-2015 Objective of the project – to explore relationships between patterns of family life and social networks that comprise family members, relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers and other society members. Target group: The younger cohorts (born in 1970-1975 and 1980-1985) at the time of survey were the same age as the older cohorts (born in 1950-1955 and 1960-1965) were in 1990

Sample:

Study sample (N=2000) represents Lithuanian population of the four specific birth cohorts that were selected on the basis of the following criteria: the younger cohorts (born in 1970-1975 and 1980-1985) at the time of survey were the same age as the older cohorts (born in 1950-1955 and 1960-1965) were in 1990. The sample was formed by using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method: in the first stage, place of residence as selection criterion was taken into account and big cities, other towns and rural areas of Lithuania were chosen; in the second stage, based on the precondition that each birth cohort should be represented by 500 persons, the exact number of female and male respondents of certain ages was set in respect of each selected settlement; in the third stage, particular respondents were identified by using selection step. In order to correct deviations from the initial survey sampling, empirical data were weighed in all age groups, using coefficients which correspond to the official statistical information on the distribution of Lithuanian population by gender and place of residence. Qualitative research (face-to-face interviews) In total 60 interviews in various regions of Lithuania were conducted: 30 men and 30 women; 15 respondents for each researced birth cohort (1950-955, 1960-1965, 1970-1975, 1980-1985). Counties selected on the basis of ethnographic and geographical location, assuming that each ethnographic region has its own family and social networking design features. Specific areas in different counties selected, depending on the results of quantitative research. Average interview time: ~54 min. The shortest interview: 18 minutes. The longest interview: ~2 hours. 30 minutes. The average transcriptions time: 10 min. of the record = 1 hr. of transcription Total number of transcripted pages: 862 p.

(in Lithuanian and English) This book presents the most important results of the representative quantitative survey as a part of the research project ""Trajectories of family models and social networks: inter-generational perspective“ (code No.VP1-3.1-ŠMM-07-K-01-106). Thematically grouped frequency distributions on the relations of family members with social networks in historical time are given. It is expected that the book will be useful information source for researchers, teachers, students, as well as policy makers and various professionals whose activities focus on family and its members’ social relations. The book is published in Lithuanian and English, and this creates opportunities for the dissemination of the results as well as for their international comparability. Vida Česnuitytė, Vida Kanopienė, Sarmitė Mikulionienė. Family in Lithuania: the perspective of social ties. Monograph. Vilnius: Mykolo Romerio universitetas, 2014. pp. 286. (in Lithuanian, Summary in English) Based on the data of research project “Trajectories of family models and social networks: intergenerational perspective” (further – the Project), the collective monograph analyses the Lithuanian family, its social ties and everyday practices, including the new and/or under-researched topics: criteria for the subjective definition of a family and a diversity of family structures, influence of social networks on the individual matrimonial behavior, family practices, the content of mutual support and its networks are discussed. As a special case, transnational families were examined, focusing on their concept and practices. These themes are analysed from gender and intergenerational perspectives, based on the comparison of data received from four birth cohorts (1950–1955, 1960–1965, 1970–1975 and 1980–1985). The empirical basis of the monograph consists of quantitative sociological research – survey of the Lithuanian population, using a standardized questionnaire (2000 persons, representing the above-mentioned four birth cohorts, were questionned) and the findings of qualitative research (60 in-depth interviews with individuals who have previously participated in the quantitative survey). The collective monograph consists of three interconnected parts: “I. (De)Construction of the Family Concept”, “II. Family Formation and Social Ties” and “III. Family Networks of Social Support”. Kanopienė, Vida; Mikulionienė, Sarmitė; Česnuitytė, Vida. Lithuanian Family in the European Context. Monograph. Vilnius: Mykolo Romerio universitetas, 2015. pp. 254. (in Lithuanian, Summary in English) This collective monograph aims to reveal the peculiarities of ongoing changes in the Lithuanian family in the broader European context. The patterns in partnership and family formation, including trends in marriage rates, divorce rates, the spread of cohabitation as well as fertility rates during the last fifty years in different European regions / countries are described and compared, the changes in family structures (household composition) are discussed and the impact of demographic ageing on family as social institution is explored (section 1). Analysis is based on Eurostat and national demographic statistics as well as secondary analysis of different pan-European survey data. Section 2 focuses on similarities and differences across European countries in family values and attitudes towards partnership / marriage, children and parenthood, gender roles and intergenerational obligations, and section 3 attempts to give an overview of interrelations between individual and family well-being and quality of life, using the data of international studies - 2008 European Value survey (further EVS) and 2012 European Community Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (further EU-SILC) and analysing the results of quantitative sociological research conducted by the authors in the frame of the project “Trajectories of family models and social networks: intergenerational perspective”.
