The effects of international migration on Romanian rural families

Abstract:

A huge migration for work from Romania to other European countries began in the last decade. This study wanted to find the consequences of this movement. The economic effects started to be evident, but a lot of rural families were affected by international travel for work. The research indentified consequences for children, spouses, local communities and also the whole population.

Sample:

A questionnaire was applied in three rural communities (Petresti, Feldru, Labnic), sample size 509 households in three different historical regions (Transylvania, Moldova, Oltenia), interviews were also conducted to obtain qualitative data. The sample was obtained by finding different historical regions (Transylvania, Moldova, Oltenia), in the qualitative part 12 persons of different age, gender, occupation, region were interviewed. Period of data collection was in spring 2010. The data were collected in the same year. Secondary data were the use of national statistics, and also the secondary analysis of other data (children remaining at home).

The migration has not only economic effects, but is influencing the life of migrants. The most important are on children, on spouses, on the local community, and on the whole population (by diminishing the birth rate, reduction of population etc).
