Abstract:

With ageing, the medical and social care needs of the elderly increase, due to the high prevalence of chronic and degenerative diseases, loss of physical strength, psycho-social disadaption, reduced social competency and increased dependence. This calls for the application of an effective mechanism for planning, organizing and implementation of geriatric care. Social and personal requirements of the elderly with dementia syndrome, who need some assistance with daily activities and health care, and who deserve to age with dignity, place value on care for them. The article discusses several questions of present interest, related to demographic ageing and its impact on the health care system, as well as a developed complex programme for prevention, early diagnostics, treatment of demented patients and support for their families.
