Abstract:

Increasing life expectancy in modern societies like Hungary is not unusual, the number of elderly people is also growing. This is a general phenomenon which places bigger pressure on the social system. Only the census can give a comprehensive picture of the elderly population's demographic characteristics, family status, living conditions, qualifications and division of labour. In this study the writers try to show the mentioned characteristics that are usually different from what the majority society thinks about this topic.

Researchers:

  • Hungarian Statistical Office

Type of research: national, using data from the 2011 census

Target group: This study examines respondents aged over 60.

Sample:

The 2011 census found 2 331 000 persons older than 60. This is 23.5% of the Hungarian population in 2011.

Aims/Objectives/Background:

The aim is to give a full picture of the quality of elderly people's life in Hungary. The study works with different fields connected to the elderly such as housing, health status, economic status, qualifications, etc.

Findings/outcome/conclusion/research questions:

Some highlighted points of the research: while in 2001 the elderly made up only 20% of the population, by 2011 this share was close to 25%. The number of this ageing group was not low but there were counties where their number is higher. Lower qualifications were found in the higher age groups, 70-80 or 80-90. The "younger" old persons were better qualified. In 2011 only 7.3% were still in the labour market, most of the 60+ group were retired.
