Abstract:

A part of the first empirical results of the author’s longitudinal study of contents and the dynamics of life plans people make in their adult years (from 18 to 68 years) is presented. The study covers а 30-year period - from 1984 to 2014. In this period the initial random sample of 500 subjects in different age cohorts grew to 1230 participants meeting once each 5h year from the study beginning. Methods of introspective-interactive psychodynamic dialogue on free associations and reflections on the theme “In future…” are used, as well as other in-depth research methods for studying the functions, cognitive-attributive and affective-motivational contents of the life plans and life history. Major existential dilemmas, socio-cultural factors and psychodynamic systems in private (introspective) and public (shared with the researcher) life planning processes are recognized. Findings are interpreted from the viewpoint of contemporary existential-psychodynamic analysis and could be considered in the realm of psychological counseling, psychotherapy and social psychology of life-span human development.
